"Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir" Mini-Review

20256612

Book: Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir

Author: Liz Prince

Format: Kindle

Publisher: Zest Books

My Rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis: Growing up, Liz Prince wasn't a girly girl, dressing in pink tutus or playing pretty princess like the other girls in her neighborhood. But she wasn't exactly one of the guys, either. She was somewhere in between. But with the forces of middle school, high school, parents, friendship, and romance pulling her this way and that, "the middle" wasn't exactly an easy place to be.

Tomboy follows award-winning author and artist Liz Prince through her early years and explores--with humor, honesty, and poignancy--what it means to "be a girl."

I absolutely loved this graphic memoir. I identified with Liz so much. I am a tomboy as well, and this book brought to light things I had pondered myself. It felt like Liz's journey and realizations are once I have had myself. All my life, people have compared me more to a boy than to a girl because I "don't act like a girl". What does it mean to act like a girl though? I think Liz analyzes this question well and it is something everything should question and try to answer.
The social messages tackled in this book are really important and dear to my heart. Feminism and femininity in general are topics I don't think get addressed and when they are, it is in bad light.
Honestly, I cannot recommend this book enough. Even if you aren't a tomboy, I think everyone should read this book so they can become enlightened and better informed on how some people struggle in society so they can help shape society into a more accepting one.
