TALKTIME #4: WHY I DON'T DO A MONTHLY TBR

The end of June has come signaling the start of July and many posts/videos dealing with people's July TBR. I however, don't do monthly TBRs and do plan on doing them.
For those of you who don't know what a monthly TBR is, it is the a goal/list of the books you plan on reading that month. So typically people will come up with a list of books they want to read that month and try to follow it.
I have a TBR, however it is like an all-time TBR, just a list of books that I would eventually sometime in my life would like to read. The only books that I have a dictated time to read are ARCS and that's because publishers expect me to have them read by a certain time. However, I typically don't make a TBR for ARCS either, but rather read them in the order I get them or whichever one is closer to the release date.
I believe reading is an experience. A part of that experience is highly dictated by mood. Personally, I read based off how I'm feeling. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a contemporary, other times dystopian. There are months where I'm just feeling like shit so I only read a few books and they are not so happy books, other months I'm like a reading machine and go through 15+ books, whatever books I have on my shelves or Kindle because I just want to read.
What I'm trying to say is I don't want to be limited in what I read or force myself to read a book when the time isn't right. I have tried to make myself read books at a certain time, and I hated them and myself for doing that. Reading should be an experience you enjoy, and to me, monthly TBRs limit my experience.

What about you guys? Do you have a monthly TBR? What are your thoughts on the concept?

  1. I'm not a TBR type person, either. I tried it in the past and it just has not worked for me. I'm too much of a mood reader. Another thing we have in common. :P
