TALKTIME #9: My Weird Book Buying Habit

TALKTIME #9: MY WEIRD BOOK BUYING HABIT

Welcome to the first Talk Time of 2016! Last year, wow that's so weird to say, I did eight talk times, which isn't that many, but hey, it's better than none. This year, I want to do more discussion type posts on my blog, so in order to accomplish this goal, I plan on doing more talk times, hopefully at least once a week, though I make no promises that I will actually follow through with that.

So today I thought I would talk to you all about a weird book buying habit I have. There is no easy way to say this, so I guess I'll jut have to be as straightforward as I can. Sometimes when I want to read a book, I don't want to buy a physical copy of the book. Buying physical books makes me feel incredibly guilty like you have no idea. When I look at all the physical books on my bookshelf, I feel a mixture of pride and also a twang of sadness. I think about what all the money I spent on the books could have been spent on instead. This guilt is only intensified when I look at the books I hate. I hate not liking the books I own after reading them. It makes me feel like I wasted not only my time but my money. As a result of this, I'm weary of buying physical books without reading them first.

Most of the time, when I first read a book, I either read the ebook from my library or buy the Kindle version. After I've read the book an I really like it, as in it is now a favorite book and I love it with all of my heart, I buy a physical copy of the book to put on my bookshelves.

Now when it comes to series, this scenario varies. Sometimes after enjoying the first book I will buy all the books in the series, other times, I will just buy the first book as a reminder of my love for the series. In really rare cases, I will read each book of the series one at a time and buy the physical book after reading each book.

So that is my weird book buying habit. Does anyone else have a habit like this? What are your weird book buying habits?

  1. I just buy many, many books. Constantly. And then horde them. Seriously, I'm like Gollum with paperbacks! :)

    2. Charity shops - they're my kryptonite. Two or three books for only one pound?! How could I resist? (And I can still open my bedroom door... just about.) I also have some beautiful vintage copies of various books which I've 'rescued' from various second hand stores and stalls (they're so beautiful! what if someone bought them who didn't love them?!?!)

    3. That sounds amazing. There are no charity shops where I'm from and where I go to college. Vintage copies <3

    4. There's a place without charity shops?! I may have to sit down!

  2. This is exactly me!! I feel so bad investing in physical books, and even my mom scolds me and tells me that I should rather buy all ebooks instead. WHY DO PIECES OF BOUND PAPER HAVE TO BE SO EXPENSIVE?!

    1. Thank goodness I'm not alone! Books are so expensive. I don't understand why either.

  3. I did this exact thing up until last year!!! I started buying more physical copies when I found some cheaper sites, like Book Outlet. As long as I can find a physical copy that is less than the Kindle version, I don't feel as guilty, especially if I don't like the book!

    1. Oh my gosh, Book Outlet is amazing. As of lately, when I do feel like taking a risk on a book with physically buying it first, Book Outlet is my go to place. I have bought so many books within the past couple of months from that site.

  4. I feel like I am the complete opposite of this! I love buying new physical books, and even if I really hate a book (say Anna and the French Kiss for example) I still don't want to part with it. I just love being able to have the books in my hands and be able to throw them if needed haha.
